Master of his Domain

Say thanks to Jake and godaddy. Today typing www.bostonist.com into firefox works. Well, ok, maybe it tells you it is a placeholder for parisist…but bostonist is sure those kinks will get worked out. Poor Tom Reilly (state attorney general, a democrat) may not be as fortunate to be master of his domain. Tim O’Brien, leader of the state Republican Party, registered several websites last Wednesday (like reillyforgovernor.com). This move seems a little underhanded, a little sneaky, and pretty much just no good. What do they think they’re going to get out of this? Is the Vice President going to tell the entire nation to visit www.FactCheck.com (he meant .org)? Oh right, that did happen. And anyone who visited got to know a little bit more about the pro-Kerry billionaire George Soros.

Bostonist is pretty sure this will be a one-day scandal of sorts whirling around these domain registrations. Reilly hasn’t officially put his hat in the ring (for governor, not to fight Hilary Swank). There has been noise of creating a law that would make it illegal to operate a website under someone else’s name, does that mean we won't be able to go to whitehouse.net anymore either? Perhaps a little tip is helpful: It’s nearly impossible to govern the internet.

And yeah, thanks Jake and GoDaddy for saving Bostonist a little piece of cyberspace. Master of our domain.

  • Didn't find an appropriate place to put this, so I put it here. Good to have you on board. Didn't even know you were coming to the party! News is scarce in the hinterlands.

I have to admit, I never really got to know Boston. Had a bad experience one weekend being hosted by an arch-conservative Tufts student from Orange County during a campus trip. Also had an accidental drug overdose there. And I hate Dunkin Donuts coffee -- but that happenned on Long Island, really, so I guess you're off the hook.

Regardless, I'm here to help, and am sure I'll have a better time when prepared by this site! Off to go chat with minor civic officials...
