It was only time before the golden boys of Boston were going to lose a bit of their shine. Sure, we’ve heard of the Sox players waiting out for more lucrative contracts, but now firstbaseman, Doug Mientkiewicz is looking to make some more cash with the game winning World Series ball. He’s got it in a lockbox in his Florida home and no one, not even Theo, can get at it.
For those of you who blacked out from joy when the Sox won it all, Mientkiewicz caught the ball from pitcher Kevin Foulke to sweep the Cardinals in St. Louis. He has had the ball ever since and now there is a fight for it. Sox management thinks they should have it but Mientkiewicz knows its value and wants to cash in on it.
The two parties have been in a standoff since last week over this issue, but things might be shifting soon. The Red Sox need to figure out which firstbaseman will be taking the field this year: happy-go-lucky Kevin Millar or ball-stealing Mientkiewicz, who was traded to the Sox in July?
Gee Doug, you might want to play nice and give the Sox their ball back?
Note: MLB is holding auditions at Fenway this Saturday January 22nd to find the biggest Red Sox fans for their "I live for this" series of commercials...If you don't mind the sub-zero temperatures and can get excited about the Sox, stop by. And then let Bostonist know how it went...
