The Headline "Wellesley Girls Gone Wild" emblazed on your front page, bigger and bolder than anything we could hope to get out of the Boston Globe—or even the Metro. The subtext even informed Bostonist that you were going to discuss a lesbian party. This seems to be well worth the quarter we’d have to drop. But shame on you Herald, with further investigation Bostonist found the same story that the Globe reported and was more about drinking than mardi gras. The story of 11 Wellesley College students sent to the hospital or college infirmary due to alcohol consumption sounds suspiciously like something we heard last year around this time of year. The Spectrum (Wellesley’s Gay/Bi/Lesbian/Transgendered group) party does not serve alcohol at the event. Bostonist knows that this can be a safe move in order to curb the on site underage drinking that might happen, just what shut down the Boink party last month. Encouraging pre-ball binge drinking is not the move to make. Bostonist always suggests a portable beer garden, all you need is a kegerator on wheels, a bartender (who can also check ID’s) and a couple of ropes). With alcohol available outside the event, the event doesn’t get shut down, and those of age can keep a buzz rather than overdosing in hopes of keeping it going longer pre-party.
