Ever been flipping thru the channels and come across a bossy blond woman on MSNBC, preaching about paying off a credit card ? Well, if you have, then you must be familiar with money-guru Suze Orman, who makes a living discussing and writing about getting out of debt and staying out of it. Bostonist has always found her tips intriguing but never worried about financial planning until her recent book was released: "The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous, and Broke." This book was written for Bostonist and all of its friends who are living paycheck to paycheck in the city. Now, you can take Orman's advice and run with it or run away from it. According to her, "They're called "Generation Debt" and "Generation Broke" by the media-people in their twenties and thirties who graduate from college with a mountain of student loan debt and are stuck with one of the weakest job markets in recent history." Orman concludes that we all live off our credit cards, might not have health insurance, and saving is a joke, which made Bostonist realize it too was young, fabulous, and broke. She gives lots of tips about saving here and there, why not to enroll in a 401K plan if you are deep in credit card debt, and what the hell a FICO score actually means. Orman also touches on jobs (what are you worth?) and how to deal with money as a young couple. There is a somewhat happy message at the end though: even though we might be poor now, we won't always be. We have time on our side.
Orman was all over the Boston news this past week as her media blitz fluttered around on March 9. She appeared at Borders in Downtown Crossing, hit up KISS 108, and finished off her appearances at the Apple Store in Cambridge. So did "Generation Broke" buy the book? Who knows? We're too busy charging a Starbucks coffee to go buy it, right?
