Metro Media Merger

metroglobe.jpgYesterday the Boston Globe announced that it was completing a deal that would purchase a 49% share in Metro Boston for $16.5 Million. The New York Times owned Boston Globe will control nearly half of the Metro’s operation in the Boston location only. The Metro free newspapers operate domestically are in Boston, Philadelphia, and New York.

The deal has more to do with advertising revenue. Starting today the Metro Boston and Boston Globe are offering combined ad packages to potential advertisers. The papers both state that the newsroom and editorial staff will all remain separate entities and will not commingle. Bostonist wonders what’s next for the Boston Globe: first the Dirt Dogs, now the Metro. With all the outrage expressed when this deal was announced back in January how is the Herald feeling today? Competitive.

Here’s a link to the PDF edition for today. Bostonist would like to mention that we read the Metro this morning on the T and there were two stories about the sale of Tom Brady’s bachelor pad. The PDF version replaces the page 25 story with a piece about Karl Malone’s home.

Just when you thought there couldn't be much more of a rag than the Herald, along came the Metro.

Do the combined ad packages this mean we'll be seeing more ads for laser eye surgery in the Globe? I hope they're serious about not comingling. I shudder to think what the bastard spawn of the Metro and Globe would be.
