Well, you know what they say - "That's why they play the games". BC came out to play in their last BIG EAST tournament as the #1 seed and with that title comes a nice big target on their backs. West Virginia came out to prove that they belong in the NCAA field of 65 and did so in a big way, going up on the Eagles by as much as 25 points at the beginning of the second half. BC managed to chop the lead down to something within striking distance, a mere 4 points, but never got any closer. The 25 points proved to be insurmountable. This victory for West Virginia will probably ensure that they come down off everyone's "Bubble Team" list (no, not that) and earn a rightful spot in the NCAA tourney as an at-large. That is, unless they win the BIG EAST tournament - then they're automatic.
What does this mean for BC, though? Obviously they have more time to practice, figure out what happened in this game, and to prepare for the "big dance". At least they'll have fresh legs, right? This also means that their chances of garnering a 2 or 3 seed are slimmer than they'd like. After today's loss they've been a mediocre 4-4 in their last 8 games after an impressive 20-0 marathon win streak. Also found in the big book of sports clichés - "You're only as good as your last game." And unless this team plays well in their next one, on the biggest stage, then it will surely be their last. C'mon Eagles - Git 'r done!
