Did you forget that this town has an NBA team, which just so happens to be in the first-place spot of their division? That's right, the C's are in first place, four games up on the 76ers, who are having trouble trying to figure out how to use this ... this "Chris Webber"-thing they got from Sacramento while they play catch-up in the Atlantic division. Four games up on a team that's struggling to gel with a new player, with 20 games to go, means that it's looking mighty nice for our boys in green.
The Celtics finished off the weekend with two amazing down-to-the-wire victories, against the NBA Champion Pistons and the Washington Wizards, another team in line for a playoff spot. Bostonist watched friday night's double-overtime game from a bar in Porter Sq., where everyone was glued to the game, cheering and booing in unison. Last nights win against the Wizards was sparked by the Celtics' bench, which outscored the Wizards bench 50-16, providing an extra boost of energy in the fourth quarter to pull out yet another close victory.
With so much going on in the Boston sports scene in the past 6 months — two world championships, BC's success, now a 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament, Red Sox spring training — it has been easy to forget about these Celtics. Now that the home stretch of the NBA season is upon us, they have picked a good time to start hitting their stride. With the return of 'Toine, a team chemistry that's started to come together, and more fan support, you never know what will happen. Has there ever been a city with three reigning World Champions?
Update: While that question was slightly skewed to the rhetorical side it should be noted that, yes, there has been a city to hold three reigning World Champs - a little place called New York.
1969-1970:
- Jets (over Baltimore)
- Mets (over Baltimore)
- Knicks (over Baltimore)
Yikes. Sorry Baltimore!
(Thanks Adam!)
