Celebrate Marty!

ragibull.jpgBostonist is super-excited about the fact that Martin Scorcese's coming to town to film The Departed, his adaptation of the Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs. Hopefully this film will be one of the Boston-based films that will do this town proud. Most Boston-based films are simply about thugs. Or dying collegiates. Or Jimmy Fallon. And while Bostonist agrees that Marty was simply robbed of Best Director a couple of times, (and he tends to lose to actor-directors, the horror!), Bostonist wants Marty to win for something great. Something spectacular. Not The Aviator.
Head on over to the Brattle Theatre this week and get your fill of Marty on the big screen, with a beautiful restored print of the stone-cold classic Raging Bull. If that black and white beauty doesn't thrill you, you can also catch the reprint of Godard's Masculin Feminin at the Kendall, and go quickly, as it may just be for this week. Pop cinema and hot French babes!
Also, Bostonist would like to encourage you to check out the interview with Darci Kittenpants over at our sister page Gothamist. Why? Fun fact time: The film that Darci produced, To Life! was filmed in late 2003 in Sharon, Massachusetts. And she's also worked with Red Bucket Films, who include in their ranks two Boston University students.

Or go see Masculin - Feminin for free at the BPL, Monday, March 28, @ 6pm.

I sure hope that Scorcese's adaptation is better than the original. Though Infernal Affairs held my attention, it was far from anything special, in my opinion.

raging bull - best boxing movie ever.

scorsese seems to have gotten out of touch with what he used to do well - the streets. the desperate, alienated characters of Raging Bull and Mean Streets and Taxi Driver have gotten lost in all the epics he's making now. i miss scorsese's grittiness. there's grittiness about boston, but can scorsese really do justice to the area? i get the feeling it could be more scorsese's new york set against a boston backdrop.
