The other day, Bostonist walked by the Loew's theater on Tremont and did a double take. The Dark Side had commandeered the sidewalk and were freaking out little kids. They were there to promote the charity premiere of Episode III to benefit City Year Boston. The movie hits theaters on May 12th in 10 U.S. cities. The costumed folks are part of the 501st New England Garrison part of a Star Wars costuming fan club that currently holds a 2900+ membership. Aside from the pictures above there were Snowtroopers, Sith Lords, and Imperial Guards on the street.

Tickets are now on sale for the Boston premire and can be purchased by going to City Year. For more info email starwars@cityyear.org.

As has been a tradition for the previous Star Wars movies, Lucasfilm will use the premieres to reaise critical funds and awareness for issues affecting children and families, by working with local charities.

In the New England area, money raised by this event will go to City Year Boston. Founded in 1988, City Year unites 17-24 year olds from diverse backgrounds for a year of full-time service to their communities and country. This year more than 1,000 City Year corps members will complete over 1.7 million hours of service, with an emphasis on mentoring and tutoring school kids in partnership with public schools, organizing after-school and school vation programs and planning and leading community service projects.
