Alright, everybody calm down. Come down off the ledge, sit back, grab a beer and relax.
This is the fourth year in a row that the Sox have lost on opening day, the last three to the O's, Devil Rays, and Blue Jays. Let's chalk this one up as being par for the course. As painful as it is to say such a thing, at least this latest opening day loss was to a good team. OK, maybe "stacked" is more appropriate.
Bostonist will be the first to admit that the Red Sox were seriously lacking in the "game" department, playing sloppy, uninspired and painful baseball. Painful like Drew Barrymore taking a baseball to the cranium, over and over again, trailer after "Fever Pitch" trailer. However, it was but one game in a very long season, so we can collectively subscribe to the mantra that's been heard in abundance since last night - "The season is a marathon, not a sprint". Bostonist can only hope that the "Idiot" Sox get up from their stumble, maybe remember to tie their shoes, and bring it to Carl Pavano tomorrow afternoon at the Stadium.
Matt Clement, the city is counting on you, pal.
What of the former Sox players who moved on? Take a look after the jump.
With today being the start of the 2005 season for so many other teams there was an opportunity to see some of these alumni in action.
Out in Arizona, Nomar Garciaparra continued the torrid hitting he started this spring training. He came out (first-pitch) swinging and drove in two runs and scored twice, ultimately going 2-5 on the day in helping the Cubs demolish the D-Backs. Is it safe to say that this is just more evidence that all Nomar needed was a change of scenery?
Meanwhile, out in Cincinatti, Pedro came out a bit rocky for the Amazin' Mets, allowing 3 first inning runs before he settled down. "Settled down" might be putting it lightly - he'd mowed down 12 Cinci batters by way of the K before handing the ball over to Willie Randolph. Maybe he should have stayed in because the Mets bullpen blew the game and lost it in the 9th, allowing a solo homer by Joe Randa to win it for the Reds. Get used to it Petey. This might be what you have to look forward to all season.
In completely unrelated Bostonian news, Dmitri Young is still a bohemoth and hit 3 dingers in the Tigers' first game. This guy really is the scariest mf'er in baseball.
