In an never-ending quest to clearly distinguish itself from Boston, the Cambridge City Council has taken steps to quash a business that has netted thousands of dollars for their neighbor to the south.
This past Monday, the Council denied a request from Melrose resident Erroll Tyler who hopes to launch a Cambridge alternative to the popular Boston Duck Tours. For months, Tyler has been working through city red-tape to win the proper licensing to launch a service which leads tourists through Cambridge hot-spots Central Square, Kendall Square before hitting the river in Charlestown. The plan hit a snafu, however, when residents of Harvard Square expressed concern with having tour vehicles constantly travel through their quaint, over-priced streets. This forced Tyler to remove Brattle Street and Aberdeen Ave. off the proposed route. But even that wasn't good enough for the Cambridge City Council who turned down Tyler's proposal by a vote of 8-0.
Being the true Bostonians we are, Bostonist has never actually been on a Duck Boat, but we were interested to read that this new service had hoped to ditch the sore-thumb army-retro vehicles for a more stream-lined, modern look. But the best feature of all -- absolutly no quacking allowed!
