Your Pyramid, Your Rules?

mypyra.jpgThe Department of Agriculture released its new and improved Food Pyramid Guide yesterday and Bostonist dropped its third piece of pizza to actually look at it. Most of you are familiar with the colorful, yet basically never followed, resource established in 1992 to gauge your nutrition; few Americans actually use it, so the goverment decided to revamp it with a spiffy new website, www.mypyramid.gov, where there are now 12, count 'em 12, personalized pyramids depending on your own age group and physical activity (i.e. getting off the couch and sweating). They've also enlisted super cheery fitness guru, Denise Austin, to promote the new program with her motto, "The more you move, the more you lose."
Bostonist looked it over and came to a conclusion. Basically, eat whole grains, low-fat dairy, fruits and veggies, and lean meats, all in moderation of course. Oh yeah, and you better be hitting the gym for at least 30 minutes a day according to the USDA.
Of course critics flocked to this chart, saying it doesn't take into consideration minority or elderly groups. No word on revising it just yet, but look for the new pyramid on your box of Cheerios in the near future.
