Eh, some bands make you think: should this really exist? Is the world a better place for it? And Louis XIV's rather stale retreads of 70s glam that has already been done better (T. Rex, Bowie) coupled with appalingly stupid and misogynistic lyrics (see the hit single "Finding Out true Love Is Blind") makes Bostonist think that the world doesn't really need this band. The thing that bugs, too, is that despite the stupid irrelevance of the lyrics (okay boys, you get laid. In nasty ways. Hooray!) some tracks do come out good: the Adam Ant aping "Illegal Tender" and the silly, but likably silly "Louis XIV" with its "me me me me" chorus.
If, by the way, you look up "Louis XIV" and "Misogynistic" on google there are a lot of hits. Lead singer Jason Hill refers to the persona as "sarcastic" but it's simply lame.
Look at it this way, if you're a 16 year old girl looking to hook up, enjoy the Louis XIV show at the Middle East tonight. Wear your shortest skirt! But if you're against mediocrity that wears thin after three spins, save your money for the better shows. It's just so schtick-y. Download Bowie's "Jean Genie" and feel a better thril, watch the hot boys in Velvet Goldmine, and ladies, pick up a guitar, please!
