No, the "Puffer Machine" is not what you’re thinking. It was announced today that Logan Airport had installed the GE EntryScan3 which Bostonist has been told is commonly refered to as the "Puffer Machine." These scanners, installed at the newly revamped Terminal A, are able to detect explosives as people walk through it, not unlike metal detectors. Apparently these new security measures caused a bit of confusion--a woman entered through an exit in Terminal B. The imprudent entrance forced the evacuation of Terminal B, re-screening of all passengers, and a host of delays. The AP interviewed a Logan Airport official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, and stated simply "When people came out, she went in."
In the same day that high tech sniffing devices are installed at Logan it is the simple entrance through an out-door that causes a stir. Prior to the acknowledgement of the security breach the TSA did issue a press release discussing the new initiatives at airports nation-wide.
Working with Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport), TSA will take advantage of Logan International Airport's natural water boundary to test an advanced water perimeter intrusion detection system. At Logan, Massport and TSA have already partnered with clam diggers who have undergone a background check to be an additional set of "eyes and ears" to monitor the area for suspicious activities. The new system will provide the clam diggers with GPS voice recognition cell phones to report any trouble as well as infrared intrusion detection system that will identify authorized individuals near active runawaysClam diggers get cell phones and nifty gadgets? I bet you could give the guy outside of Walgreens on Newbury Street a clamdigger and he’d watch for suspicious activity.
