Bostonist pines over those fellow T riders who get to block out the screeching of the brakes and the annoying chatter of others, with the tranquilty of an iPod during the morning commute. Oh, to listen to the stylings of rap sensation 50 Cent than the T. But it looks like those who are off in their own music world need to be a little more aware of their surroundings. In New York City, their Transportation Authority has started putting up ads warning subway riders of the possibility of theft, especially of iPods (ed. note: this includes non-Apple MP3 players as well). In the past year in their city, 50 iPods were stolen on the subway, up from zero in 2004. According to an article in today's Metro, the MBTA reports that 5 have been stolen on the T so far this year. Although these numbers don't sound like a whole lot, this recent wave in theft has caused patrons to take notice.
Transit authorities in both cities are warning people to keep iPods in their bags, preferably with your hands on it. Oh, and those little white earbuds are a dead giveaway. Switch them up with something less noticeable and those thieves might think you're listening to a really hip tape walkman. Bostonist is sure that the MBTA just wants passengers to be be smart about all their belongings while riding the wonderful transit system here in Boston. It is wonderful, isn't it?
