What Do You Get a 375-year-old?

375.jpgThe month of May marks the kickoff of "Boston 375," the name for the four-month long celebration in the city to celebrate its 375th birthday in 2005. Mayor Menino has decided that numerous events over the course of the summer will truly get Bostonians excited about it. While the final itinerary has not been distributed yet, the city does have some things on the agenda so far.

-On May 21, hot-air balloons will be launched from different parts of the city, which could make for some great photo-ops.
-A parade downtown is in the works for September 25, with each part of Boston being represented. Bostonist can only imagine how they will "represent" themselves. Somehow, it seems it might get a bit stereotypical, don't you think?
-Free outdoor concerts will be held June 18-25, along with tours of museums and historical sites.
-Some sort of international conference with reps from Boston's sister cities, which include Melbourne, Barcelona, and Kyoto, will be held. Do you think they'll all compare whose public transportation sucks the most?
-The 3rd Annual Boston Arts Festival, held in Christopher Columbus Park, will be stepped up this year with fireworks over the waterfront.
-Menino has also cooked up separate parties for each of the 20 neighborhoods, a gospel fest on July 17, a hip-hop fest on August 6, a folk art showcase, and an authors' series.

Bostonist wants to know one thing: where the hell are they going to get a cake big enough for all 600,000 residents? It's just unheard of to celebrate a big birthday like the 375th without some sugary white icing adorned with roses, right?
