Weekend Music Picks

lucksmiths1.jpgFriday: Think of the musical options for tonight in terms of The Cure: if you want to see dreamy local rock bands do their best-pyschedelic Brit-pop thing, check out Stereo Soul Future, The December Sound, the dance-y Cyanide Valentine, and Aloud at the Middle East Upstairs. If you want to dance to ten-minute long Cure remixes, head on over the The Pill at Great Scott and kick it to Suede songs. Finally, if you want to check out Cure songs that are chopped and screwed; let's say, The Cure with Outkast's "Bombs Over Baghdad", then get on over to The Enormous Room in Cambridge where Certified Bananas will be dropping the hot hip hop, grime, pop, what have you.
Certified Bananas are part of what Bostonist could see as a nascent hip hop dj/blogger thing--on their site, they post monthly mixes that are a good half hour's worth of beats and jawns and funny voices going "This shit is BANANAS! B-A-N-A-N-A-S!" The April mix has gotten Bostonist through work this week, and it's hot stuff: Kano, Destiny's Child, Kelis, Nas, Modest Mouse, Edan, etc. You know how Diplo and his Hollertronix crew started a great mix up of styles and influences? Think along those lines, but you don't have to go to the Avalon to see it. Tonight's guest DJ is blogger Nick Barat, aka Catchdubs, aka Fader editor, and this kid is essentially paid to be cool so he'll treat you with gentle hands.
Saturday: You should be at P.A.'s Lounge listening to The Lucksmiths. They're Australian, so you gotta carpe diem because when can they afford to tour with their sweet indie pop? It's a critique show, and The Critique is a booker that you can trust.
Sunday: End the weekend with The Mountain Goats at the Middle East. John Darnielle is a cult hero unparalled, people freak out over him, and the new album is getting estastic reviews. Buy your tickets now, thank Bostonist later. Literate, harrowing, fascinating: all that good stuff.

Fix that certified bananas link! www.certifiedbananas.com . And if I had more of my wits about me, I would've added that one of those lucksmiths is totally cute in a colin meloyish way, so those overheated decemberists fan girls should really get out for that show.
