As the Sox made their way into the 2003 post-season the rallying cry was, as many Bostonians and baseball fans alike remember, "Cowboy Up!". Cowboy boots, hats, bolo ties, a lot of beaten dead horses, another season, and a World Series Championship later - "Cowboy Up!" looked to be put to pasture. But after the game Kevin "Kentucky Fried Cowboy" Millar had tonight the denizons of Red Sox Nation might be willing to concede the catch-phrase embargo and re-adopt it. Of course that is, God help us, IF he wanted it.
Why the drastic concession? Last night he contributed to the 13-5 drubbing of the Oakland A's with his first home-run of the season. Until then, other than Edgar Renteria, the Red Sox infield has been putting up donuts in the home-run column, prompting Millar, Mueller and Bellhorn to start up a "HR-Drought Pool". Could that have been the watershed moment in our infield's home-run production? Has Johnny Damon sold his soul to Satan to hit the ball at such a torrid pace? Do the Yankees truly suck? Are these rhetorical questions irritating?
Bostonist can answer one of those questions for sure. Kevin Millar walked up to bat in the 9th with David Ortiz on first, the Red Sox down 2-1, and hit a line-drive into the Green Monster seats to win the game in walk-off fashion. With a long 162 game season there are more than enough opportunities to witness these dramatic walk-off conclusions. Let's hope this is the start of a trend, both the dramatic endings and the infield offensive production. Two home-runs in two days is the makings for a good start for our good ole' buddy Kevin.
