New Release Tuesday: Spoooooooooooon!

spoon50.jpg Admittedly, Bostonist should tell you about tonight's Kathleen Edwards show at the Paradise. She's a Canadian variation of the venerable Lucinda Williams and she has a knack for writing hard-luck songs--Bostonist's personal favorite, "Westby", is a scathing Lolita track with a snotty chorus: "If you weren't so old I'd probably keep you/ If you weren't so old I'd tell my friends/ But I don't think your wife would like my friends." Catty! She's country, she sings about hockey, and she has sizzling on-stage chemistry with her guitarist. (husband, maybe?)
Bostonist should also mention the Thunderbirds Are Now! show at Great Scott, because Bostonist has a proliclivity towards bands with an exclamation point (Pants Yell!) in their name and the French Kiss Records
band has gotten shout outs from one of the best live bands of the past five years, the singular Les Savy Fav.
Bostonist, however, is going home tonight and watching the season finale of Veronica Mars, which should involve much shrieking and excitement. For those of you who have been watching the show, admit it: it's the most gripping TV mystery since Twin Peaks. Heck yes. And Bostonist is also going to listen to the new Spoon record, too.
Now Bostonist isn't going to tell you about this every week, general public, but Bostonist--who, mind you, doesn't really need to shell out for music--would hang out at Newbury Comics at midnight for the new Spoon record. Because it's exciting. You could do well by picking up Gimme Fiction—Britt Daniel is a font of catchiness with a true raspy rock voice and a gift for music in angular Elvis Costello/Kinksisms.
Bostonist isn’t quite sure when everyone got on Spoon’s jock, although Merge has always been A Label You Can Trust. Bostonist can’t remember Spoon getting this much advance press for the nearly-perfect Girls Can Tell or the (*cough six great songs and some amount of filler*) slightly overrated Kill The Moonlight. However, Spoon’s got the right sound for these nearly summer-days, and they’ll be playing the Paradise on Tuesday, June 7th. Bostonist would encourage you to buy your tickets now, online, and incur that eight dollar extra fee. Thanks, Ticketbastard!

or one could go to the paradise to buy tix and not have to pay fees.

True--but The Paradise's box office hours are not particularly helpful to those who work 9-5, bro.

I caught Edwards last night at the Iron Horse in Northampton, but haven't had time to post a review. The guitarist is her husband, though I couldn't see rings on either of 'em.

Opener Mary Gautier is an interesting bird, as well...

overrated? bah. the new weezer album is overrated. kill the moonlight was just damn good. ed hasn't seen much (any) advance press for the new spoon album, but ed hasn't kept up on his alternative music press the way ed would like, so there you go.

is that what spoon looks like? how does that voice come out of that guy?

In comparison to Girls Can Tell, Kill The Moonlight does not deserve the unanimous hosannahs it got. It hangs together a lot less effectively as an album. The tinymixtapes review is pretty apt.

But! New Spoon is awesome and I was walking out of Newbury Comics like a star. Sounds so good on the headphones!

Wow, is this headline a reference to The Tick's battle cry? If so, I applaud you.

(If not, nevermind).

I don't know, Ezra, did I drunkenly buy the first 13 issues of the tick at a thrift store in vermont?

Indeed the contrast between now and GCT days is odd, but even then I was shocked I hadn't heard their first two albums when they came out. And given that they quickly became my fave band, I'll take belated recognition over none.

Listening to the new LP now... like it, but think it may be as uneven as Moonlight.

what is this shim-shammery?!? i stand by KTM as a quality album. this is a terrible comparison, but i suppose rubber soul was overrated compared to revolver? yankee hotel foxtrot was overrated compared to being there? oh wait, it was, sorta.

ya'll are still crazy.
