Bikes Not Bombs may be one of Bostonist's favorite local non-profits. Its purpose is pretty awesome (and slightly awesomely absurdist): on the website, they say they work "to achieve peace and social justice through grassroots organizing and promoting community-based education and development projects involving recycled bicycles and other environmentally sustainable modes of transportation."
This translates to the community in several ways. First, they run a bike shop that sells pretty refurbrished bikes and will fix your bike, train people in bike mechanic skills, bike safety, etc., and they ship bikes overseas to community bike programs in places like Nicaragua and El Salvador.
So Sunday's bike-a-thon is a big deal and the largest fundraiser of the year for the group. They're in need of both riders, volunteers, or donations, and it should be a fun time. You can get out of the house, ride a bike for 15-62 miles, your choice really, and/or volunteer to help out a great institution. Show Bikes Not Bombs some love, cuz' you know you love your bike, right?
