Seriously? Bostonist suspects that the earth is safe for geeks at the moment, with the upcoming release of Star Wars 6: Bostonist (a Star Wars virgin, actually) Doesn't Wanna Give Lucas Any More Money. But check the crazy good options for music this weekend. Is there any coincidence to the fact that the geek-rock is out in full force?
Friday's actually pretty straightforward--The Good North are playing at Great Scott's The Pill dance-night. A brother band to Gothamist favorite and Boston locals The Information, The Good North have pretty, driving guitars and intense lyrics. They keep getting better, too, as evidenced by their new myspace song "Michael Do This." It'll be good to see them at The Pill as the venerable Brit-pop night played a part in the band's origins, Bostonist believes.
There's really a plethora of options for Saturday night. Bostonist hopes you while away the afternoon at the Harry and The Potters show, but you could do anything during the night. Over at PA's Lounge, there's the Saturday Night Sock Hop! with Eli "Paperboy" Reed, The Two-Timin' Three, and Champale Rider. Bands start at 8PM and Reed is also djing. Maybe someday he'll be a paperman! (Bostonist is exhausted, apologies all around.)
Also on Saturday, Ben Folds plays the Avalon. Wildman from NYC Corn Mo is opening, and if you haven't seem Corn Mo live, you really should. He plays the accordion, he has a song called "Busey Boy", he's kind of indescribable. And as a teenage Ben Folds Five fanatic, Bostonist knows that Ben Folds puts on a fun show and has a nice smile. Besides, "Songs For The Dumped" is awesomely catharthic live!
Then there's the Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra at The Middle East downstairs. Polyrhytmic beats and funky breaks! Damm!
Sunday--end your week with Leslie Hall. She's playing the Milky Way in a super-stacked Truth Serum show with Cassette, Robo Sapien, and PAL. Bostonist wants to see Leslie and the LYs live becaue dang, their myspace page is both intriguing and confusing. Who is this hip hop lady? What are these "gold pants" and "gem sweaters"? Oh man.
