There’s nothing like a little (*ahem*) VB roaming around in Beacon Hill to get you going in the morning. Nothing like it, except for Bob Lobel’s sports commentary on WBZ 4’s Sports Final. Well, OK, there’s something a bit more idiotic about those live on location spots that VB has used to spice up Fox 25’s morning newscast. Bostonist has been known on a number of occasions to sit in front of the TV and ask: "Is that guy drunk?"
Apparently that is not a fair question to ask anymore according to Bob Lobel’s attorney. When Darby Conley made a stab at Lobel on Friday the thirteenth in his syndicated comic "Get Fuzzy" Lobel didn’t take kindly to the treatment and filed libel suit. Bostonist would like to think this falls under the first amendment's free speech privilege, and since Lobel is a celebrity he is subject to ridicule in the public more than a private individual.
The Boston Globe didn’t like the stab either, protecting the host of their SportsPlus show by editing the comic to read him instead of Lobel in their run of the May 13 comic. We only wonder what kind of adjustments the Herald has been making to liberal strips without us noticing.
Lobel isn’t speaking publicly on the issue but his lawyer and agent have made claims that he doesn’t drink much and has never appeared on air intoxicated. And Bostonist thought you were a sox fan Bob! Lobel’s agent was quoted describing Bob's on air personality as "breezy." That defense strategy seems as rock solid as Michael Jackson playing a video testifying that little boys sleep in his bed with him.

Democratic Primary Debate at WGBH: Transcript Time!

If the first amendment protects Hustler magazine when it runs a satirical piece implying that Jerry Falwell has sex with his own mom in an outhouse (see Hustler v. Falwell, 485 U.S. 46 [1988]), I think it's a safe bet that it protects Darby Conley here. Of course, nothing expresses outrage like a lawsuit (remember when Fox News sued Al Franken, claiming to have proprietary rights to the phrase "fair and balanced"?).
maybe someone could edit mallard fillmore and actually make it funny.

I went to rehab with Bob Lobel. He's suing claiming libel when the cartoon is the truth. He was in rehab for alcohol.
