dear god what a terrible idea. what would be the incentive for the company to improve services or lower tolls?

that said, the pike is awful. plenty of roads that are just as long and well-trafficked don't have the tolls that the pike does. the best i can hope for this propoal is it lights a fire under the current pike leadership and they try to make things better.

What could a private highway possibly get you that a publicly owned one doesn't? First of all, a private company will try to make a profit, and if the budget isn't good NOW, prices will just go up. Also, what is a private company going to do with repaving the roads? The state has an infastructure of plows and road crews to do roadwork, that a private company would have to build or hire. Thats higher prices. The only ways to make money would be more rest stops, which near the city, there isn't the land to build these areas. The fact remains that a private company owning the Pike has the makings to be the biggest disaster since the Big Dig. Good post.
