Central Square = A Big Mess

Republicans aren't the only thing to watch out for in Cambridge today. Apparently it's the season for exploding manholes, too. We're not really sure what constitutes an "exploding manhole", but we're pretty sure it's bad. The AP is reporting that an NStar equipment failure led to an underground fire around 3pm. Police closed Mass Ave. in Central Square and the Red Line is slow as molasses. Let's just hope you aren't one of the five to six thousand customers without power and that the AC's working on those trains. It's been a rough couple of days for the Red Line, with a 45 year-old male struck and killed by a train Thursday. Yikes.

Whatever happened today, must have been fixed by the time I took the Red Line through the area around 10 pm.

I came out of the T at about 5:00 yesterday evening, and of course it was still all blocked off. There were probably 25 to 30 Cambridge Police officers, emergency helicopters overhead, and interestingly, the Red Cross emergency response unit which you normally see at house-fires and other tragedies were people are hurt or displaced. I couldn't find any mention in news stories about anyone being hurt (though I overhead a woman on the T say a man was killed when the manhole cover flew through his windshield).

ed managed to get from park street to central relatively easily yesterday around 5.45 and walked through central square with ease. all the lights were out at the central T station, and there was no power at any of the businesses along mass ave, which were forced to close. harvest co-op probably lost a good amount of food. i hope they had a generator or something to keep things cold.

it's like the time that water main broke near kendall a couple months ago. utilities in cambridge have had problems lately. also, ed's electricity seems to go off and then back on in the middle of the night fairly regularly and he's not happy about it.

Harvest probably doesn't have a generator. On one of the 11 o'clock local news shows, they showed someone from Harvest handing out free ice cream to passersby, because otherwise it would just melt.
