The Search for the Perfectly Priced Beer

beers.jpgJuly is National Beer Month and Bostonist is always up for some good, cheap beer during these summer months. Prices in bars in Boston range from a low $1.50 for 16oz at Sissy K's to a ridiculously high $6.00 dollars for 16 oz at Fenway Park. We want to recommend a few spots to make the paycheck go further, since we hate spending more just to have the same amount of beer.

Bostonist recently took in a game down in Brockton with Oil Can Boyd pitching for the the Brockton Rox. We were shocked at the three dollar parking, because not only were there spaces, but it wasn't $100 to park. Our jaw dropped as we ordered a large beer and they gave us 24 oz. of frothy goodness for only $3.75 and the service was so good that the attendant actually took our beer back because "it wasn't full to the top" without any prompting! We love the Red Sox, but if you're looking to not spend a week's paycheck just to watch some baseball, this is a nice alternative. 19710327_d83be00635_m-1.jpg

However, if you want the best deal in town, head over to either the Harpoon Brewery Tasting or the Sam Adams Brewery Tour. For a dollar donation to charity, you will get free beer samples as you learn all about the brewing process. While the Sam Tour is easier to get to on the T, the Harpoon Tasting lets you drink all the way through, where the Sam Tour makes you wait until the end.

For those that don't delight in a nice cold beer, stop by The Ruby Room in the Onyx Hotel; they're commemorating their one year birthday tonight and next Wednesday the 29th with an open bar from 6-7 pm. A high class hotel giving away free martinis? If you can find a better deal than that, we'll wager that you had to be naked.

There should be a directory of bars in Boston. One of those categories should be dive bars. For a town whose reputation, besides as a historical centerpiece, is primarily for being a bunch of Irish and/or college swillers, it's a noticeable lapse. My contribution:

Mary Anne's in Cleveland Circle, BHP in (?) Beacon Hill, P.J. Kilroy's in Audubon Circle, Sligo's in Davis, and Whitney's in Harvard Square. I'd also go with the Tam in the Theater District. Great place to watch a Sox game. And, finally, a moment of silence for My Brother's Place. Now there was a dive bar.

that one next to sissy k's is also pretty cheap. sissy k's refused to take my out of state license. just refused. so if you aren't from massachusetts, you aren't allowed to drink there apparently.

hmm, other cheap places...oh, the Tam, near the theater district. the burned out shell next to the Tam used to be one of my favorite bars. the cantab in central square is reasonable. all the bars in east somerville are pretty cheap. the other side on newberry is pretty good if you don't mind bicycle messengers. there's dirty stuff in allston that's pretty cheap too.
