A Little Absolut in Your Latte?

mail.jpgBostonist just learned that Dunkin Donuts and Absolute Vodka have become partners...No, this doesn't mean the new way to bring yourself back will be with a Dunkaccino Martini during your coffee break. It means the Jim Beam and Absolute Vodka distributors, French based Pernod Ricard SA, and U.S. based Fortune Brands Inc., purchased Allied Domecq PLC, the U.K. based parent company of Dunkin Donuts, this past April.

Back in 1990, William Rosenberg sold his Canton-based Dunkin Donuts to Allied Domecq PLC, and since then, the company has done some good things, like the Coffee Coolatta, and some bad things like getting rid of the Crullers, and replacing them with "sticks." Now that the French are in charge, Bostonist expects the Cruller to resurge, but overall, this makes Dunkin Donuts less and less a Boston franchise. Would the original Dunkin have ever tried to compete with the Italian Coffee shops in the North End by opening a shop on Hanover Street? While Bostonist frequently stops in at the Purple and Orange, we might need to use the Delocator to support our Boston-based coffee shops.
