7-11 Heaven

2222711_slurpee_d.jpgWith temperatures in the 90s this lovely Monday, Bostonist believes we've found a way to keep cool: The Slurpee at 7-11. While most overlook this economical alternative to a Coolatta or Frappucino (and better tasting than the Slush Puppy), the Slurpee's frozen soda combination was an accident after Omar Knedlik's soda machine broke and he had to put the sodas in the freezer. These frozen sodas were a hit with customers so Knedlik invented a machine that could keep the drink at a cold 28 degrees Fahrenheit. He shopped around the beverage machine to store owners; after many people passed on the idea, 7-11 bought the machine in 1965 and has been serving Slurpees ever since.

The Slurpee celebrates its 40th anniversary today by giving away free Slurpees for all (while supplies last of course). Bostonist isn't sure about the size given out (40 oz. anyone?), but we'll be stopping by for our free one this afternoon.

  • people (or maybe just one jerk; it usually is) were spouting off about how the 7-11 slurpee giveaway was a 'scam' on craig's list today. i have a strong feeling they didn't even enter a 7-11 and inquire.

i got mine this afternoon at my local 7-11 on jersey st. sweet.

AND, there are slurpee cups in the shape of Yoda's head--if you want to cough up $3.14 for it. Free slurpee kicked in.
