Today (or if you’re reading this post after 12:00 p.m. EDT, then, yesterday) Shanghaiist made a grand entrance onto the scene. With great trepidation Bostonist typed in the URL expecting our browser to ask us to install additional language packs.
Nope, editor Dan Washburn and his team of contributors bring the –ist network to Asia in English. We’ve been hearing a lot about China lately, from Dick Gordon’s seeming fascination with the country to Grandad’s stories about growing up in Shanghai (Great Grandad Bostonist was head of the YMCA over there). In a Boston connection, albeit fictional, Dan points out that Cliff Clavin could have been Chinese, since 30% of Chinese adults live with their parents, just like Cliff. Bostonist isn’t sure if Dan has a one-child policy of his own but it seems Jackie Chan has married off all the women from his staff.
Shanghaiist is difficult to spell - with that string of vowels put together we just get all jumbled. Bostonist figured that was the reason that Jake chose Phillyist rather than Philadelphiaist.
Apparently it was more about his love for the Philly cheesesteak than vowel frugality that made him do it. John Carroll edits the City of Brotherly Love’s very own –ist. Bostonist is just tickled pink (or is it dusty rose?) about having another brother. We have been learning about Philly by tuning in for Phillyist coverage of Live 8, their crying about losing Schilling (Boston has lost him to Pawtucket, apparently), and their noting what a jackass he is.
