The All-Star festivities began in earnest tonight as Phillies right fielder Bobby Abreu demolished the competition with 41 home runs, in total, to win the Home Run Derby. Not only did Bobby tear the covering off the baseball most often, he is the owner of this year's farthest traveled ball as well - a mammoth 517 feet. Chicks, indeed, do love the long ball, Bobby. Our own Big Papi, David Ortiz, showed up to mash as well and while he put 17 into the Comerica bleacher seats in round 1, he fell a little short in round 2 with only 3 dingers. No worries though, Bostonist says, save it for the game that "counts" - tonight's marquee All-Star game.
So what about this All-Star game? With OUR Red Sox being THE reigning World Series champions Tito Francona will serve as the AL skipper with Tony Larussa heading the National Leaguers. Of the 4 players leading off for the AL 3 are our own, Boston's best, Johnny Damon (leading off), David Ortize (3rd up), and Manny (4th) ... with Jason Varitek batting in the 8-spot. If Joe Torre can stack the line-up year after year, then shoot, so can Francona. Taking the mound for the two squads are Mark Buehrle (AL) and Chris Carpenter (NL). The line-up the American League is putting out there looks like it will do some serious damage; at least that's what Bostonist is hoping for. Home field advantage for this year's Series would be nice. So when and where is the game on? Look for it on FOX at 8pm.
And lastly, after watching some of the celebrity softball game, it's rather evident that these days Bo knows cheeseburgers.
