Even if you haven't read it, when you think chick lit, you think of the ubiquitous books by Jennifer Weiner, right? Good In Bed, In Her Shoes, Little Earthquakes: each book has a distinctive look about it (after In Her Shoes, nearly every chick lit book came out with legs and shoes on the cover) and you've seen it at the bookstore. Now Bostonist has mixed feelings on "chick lit" as a genre (don't get Bostonist drunk and talking about it because then it gets complicated) but the thing is that Jennifer Weiner is a good storyteller and there's something kind of radical about her books. Good In Bed is the story of a plus size gal and that's the way she is, while In Her Shoes is a complicated look at sisters and image and success. The stories manage to go down easy but Weiner is a writer of admirable nuance.
Needless to say, she's like the grand dame of the chick lit genre and she's reading at the Wellesley Free Library tonight at 7PM. Hear her talk about her latest book, Little Earthquakes, and see if she'll dish on the upcoming film version of In Her Shoes, with Toni Colette and Cameron Diaz as sisters. Ask her whether it's really feasible to hide out in Princeton like you're in With Honors or something! From her website, she's as likable as her books and it should be a good time.
