Silly Crime Wave Hits Cambridge and Somerville

neighborhoodwatch.jpgBostonist knows that crime doesn't pay, but sometimes it sure is funny. Over the last few weeks, it seems a humorous crime-spree has broken out north of the Charles.

The crime wave began two weeks ago when a Somerville cop noticed a car pulling into the Foodmaster parking lot in West Somerville for an apparent drug deal. As the cop approached the car, its driver Dwayne Jones became "combative," tried to run down the officer. He then tried to flee on foot, and as the Somerville Journal reports:

Jones discarded his clothes and shoes to "facilitate his escape" along Alewife Brook Parkway, and he ran into oncoming traffic with his genitals and buttocks exposed to the public, the report states.

The following week, the Journal -- in all it's Herald-subsidiary glory -- flashed across it's frontpage:

Naked fat man flees arrest

Jones was found in possession of a "green substance believed to be marijuana.

Our next silly crook comes to us from Cambridge where police have arrested Craig Hawkins for a series of armed robberies in the city. Aptly nicknamed the "Band-Aid Bandit," police say Hawkins allegedly placed a Band-Aid over a facial scar so no one could identify him by the scar. Problem is:

since Hawkins wore his miniature disguise during many of the robberies, witnesses identified him by the Band-Aid, police said.

The Cambridge police have one theory, but Bostonist thinks this is just a misguided attempt by a burnt-out advertising rep. to gain publicity for Nelly's new clothing line.

And finally, it's back to Somerville where both the Somerville Journal and Somerville News report that Davis Square has been plagued in recent weeks with the dirty work of the so-called "Green Thumb Thief." Apparently, residents and businesses have noticed potted plants and other garden-related items disappearing from their yards, porches and window boxes. But unlike our previously discussed incidences where it was up to the cops to fight the crime, Davis Square residents have taken the fight into their own hands, posting signs that read:

ATTENTION THIEF, We are watching you. Get help before you get arrested.

Help? He doesn't need help -- only hibiscus!
