Society Sucker

If materialism and celebrity shallowness is your bag, then you'll be psyched to hear about the new magazine, Boston Common. From the mind of BU grad Jason Binn comes a three pound periodical for the young, hip, rich customers, early-to-mid 30's, $250,000-plus income crowd. Can't decide whether to laugh or vomit?:

Boston Common is the newest sensation taking over the streets of one of America’s oldest cities. This unique publication reaches the wealthiest and most sophisticated readers in Boston.

Wealthy and sophisticated folks on the streets, rrriight. Niche Media owns similar magazines for New York, Los Angeles, Aspen, and the Hamptons, and soon in Washington. The Globe describes the content as:

Acres of party pictures and articles written by local faux celebrities.

Never one to confuse wealth for cred, Bostonist will stick to reading Swindle and Vice.

Don't we already have The Improper Bostonian for this purpose?

the improper bostonian, like stuff@hight, is just a magazine-style ad for newberry street, the rack, and bars really want to be trendy. i can only guess that the copy writers for both are on an obscene amount of coke since they report on trends approximately 6 months after they're over and seem to think their writing is worth publishing. of course, that's when they aren't just publishing unedited press release from PR flaks, so maybe they're at least aware of their limitations.

you can probably guess what i think of boston common.
