Bostonist ♥ Foreign Film: File Under Movies

_40120268_shabnam.jpgIberoamerican Film Festival at the BPL. The festival, which began Tuesday and runs to the end of August, features movies from Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries every Tuesday and Wednesday evening in the Boston Public Library's air-conditioned Rabb Hall.

Since the birth of Baby Bostonist, we have not been able to catch as many movies as we once did, but we can say that María Full of Grace, the one picture in the festival to get a major American release (making it available to us via Netflix), was really really good. A bit of googling tells us that the other films on the bill also seem quite interesting - a good mix of serious, noir-ish movies (like María Full of Grace and Un Oso Rojo [in Spanish; sorry]), goofy ensemble comedies (like Corazón de Melón [Spanish again]), and period dramas with a bit of romance, a bit of politics, and a bit of magical realism (La Pluma del Arcángel [finally, a plot summary in English]). (Googling these movies also brought Bostonist to a review of the movie "8 Mile" on a Chilean site, amusingly entitled, "Calle de las ilusiones: Eminem is in the house!") Admission is free, but a reference librarian advised Bostonist that the popular movies tend to fill up quickly, so it's best to show up at least half an hour early and get in right when the doors open.
