Bottles and Cans, Yes we Can...or Just Bottles

brewtour.jpgBostonist got a thirst for a cold one at 8 a.m. this morning, the article on cans vs. bottles in the Boston Globe didn’t help. Though they mentioned Jim Koch's "Beer Drinkers' Bill of Rights," they failed to mention that Sam Adams only uses bottles but they claim to only use pop tops, no screw off caps (Bostonist swears we’ve had a screw off Sam before). After a slow go at the rest of the Boston Globe this morning with other headlines like "Filene’s Brand Will be Gone," we’ve known that for months, and "Mosquitoes Found to Carry Diseases," new cases of West Nile notwithstanding, we’ll never forget about Malaria and Dengue; Bostonist picked up a Metro at Downtown Crossing on the morning commute. We’d sworn off the Metro over a month ago, but every now and again a copy makes its way into our hands. It’s Friday after all, and we spied a picture of one of our favorite man among men, Jim Koch, to the right of the Imbiber's column. Apparently Bostonist missed out on the Faneuil Hall event yesterday when Sam Adams, err, the Boston Beer Company, empties out all the old beer they’ve collected in the past year into a dunk tank and makes founder Jim Koch sit on the bar waiting for a bath. Koch was guaranteed at least one trip into the tank yesterday as Tim Wakefield took aim at the target. Celebrity appearances aside, Bostonist missed the drinking more.

Bostonist now turns back to the Imbiber, Dan Dunn’s column, in the Metro. Today’s episode, titled "A beer revolution" read just like the tour of the Sam Adams Brewery in Jamaica Plain. Bostonist is very familiar with the tour, in fact, we’re getting very close to breaking into the fifty tour club. The tour starts with a video of Jim Koch narrating the history of Sam Adams beer. The facts and snippets given in the Imbiber today are just what you’d find out watching the pre-tour video. Bostonist will give you another two tidbits, for free: the recipe for Sam Adams was right under Jim Koch’s nose, or "quite literally over my head" as he explains how he found his grandfathers beer recipe in the attic of his house, also, you can see that "years of drinking have loosend Sam up a bit" from the pictures here you can see;oldsam.jpgnewsam.gif
his mug is a bit higher, smile wider, and he's got another button undone. If you hop on the Orange Line outbound to Forrest Hills today after work, get off at Stony Brook. The tour starts at 5:30 p.m. with the video, so if you’re late don’t worry, you’ll only miss what you heard here. A suggested $2 charitable donation will get you a tour of their small production test-kitchen brewery, the sample of 3 different beers (last time we went they were sampling an 8% wonder called Three Weizen, before that a smoky beer that tasted like BBQ pork), and you get to keep the glass you drink it from.

Sam Adams' Brewery Tour, Boston Beer Company is located at 30 Germania Street in Jamaica Plain.
