Today's news brings word of President Bush's
recess appointment of John "
Michael" Bolton to be ambassador to the UN and of Rafael Palmeiro's
suspension for steroid use (no word yet on whether further punishments are in the works for the
other performance-enhancing drugs he uses). Because these are not stories of particular local interest (except insofar as Jason Giambi is totally
back on the juice and it will be really annoying if his enhanced performance gives the Yankees an edge that somehow affects the Sox), they warrant no treatment here. But a friend of Bostonist's noticed something about these two stories that we think demands attention (although it is equally unrelated to Boston). Her theory went like this:
Bush likes John Bolton. Bush likes Palmeiro a lot. Both Palmeiro and Bolton have 1970s porn-star moustaches. Bush just appointed Bolton to an important government post. Palmeiro just did something that may hurt his chances in the job market in coming years. Bush is looking for candidates to fill an anticipated job opening in another important government post, and he has expressed admiration for people of questionable qualifications. Can Chief Justice Palmeiro be far off?
