Fight August Doldrums With Free Music

spoon.jpgBostonist has felt like Boston's been pretty slow lately. Sure, there are fun things to do, but when the heat index is high and the humidity's sweltering, it's easiest to just go to the beach. However, Bostonist wants to alleviate your tension by telling you about a couple of things.
(And Bostonist apologizes for failing to mention the Grizzly Bear show at TT's last week: we'd "recount" it, but generally, live reviews just make you wish you were there, right? Let it be known, however, that Grizzly Bear, led by Boston native Edward Droste, were fantastic and one of the best live shows Bostonist has seen in quite some time. Think reverb-drenched Beach Boy harmonies from the dead, everything that Animal Collective should be and isn't live. Also (cue shallowness): foxy!)
First off, there's the opportunity for "getting on the VIP list" by going here. These guys are throwing shows with Airborn Audio, OK Go, and a whole variety of local and national bands. It's going on all month, so get into it now!
Lastly, WFNX has announced the first hatch shell show in years that isn't underwhelming: Spoon on Thursday, August 18th. God knows how their sound will hold up in the great outdoors, but Spoon put on an excellent show and Britt Daniel will make you cry. Possibly. He's a sensitive guy.
Also, since you (and Target) love The Hold Steady, may Bostonist make a gentle reminder to pick up tickets to their upcoming September TT's show? Question: are The Hold Steady the rockingest band fronted by a BC grad? Answer: Bostonist doesn't know, but Bostonist does know that you can go to TT's after 6 and pick up tickets without a service charge, and you should go there soon to get your Hold Steady tickets and (since you love hype) your Clap Your Hands Say Yeah tickets. (Bostonist still can't believe that the latter was confused with Get Him Eat Him in an earlier post, but then again, there's really a spate of mono-syllabic bands ordering you to do stuff right now.) Do it before the students come back, with their disposable income et al.

i think the new album is a little underwhelming, now that i've given it a few spins. spoon is still great, however, as are most of the other bands you mentioned. fun.
