When John Roberts was initially announced as the Bush administration's pick to succeed Sandra Day "Swing" O'Connor, Bostonist couldn't help but feel disappointed, as it signalled the end of our own governor's dark horse candidacy for the Supreme Court post. But now our hopes are alive again, as Roberts has been bumped up and nominated chief (sorry, Nino!). If his confirmation goes as quickly and happily as everyone seems to think, Mitt could get the call before New Year's, saving Bay State residents from more agonizing months of quixotic, Alabama-style policy proposals announced from New Hampshire and aimed at Iowa. Seriously, we think it's a win-win: Mass. gets rid of Romney, Bush gets a pseudo-moderate with imperturbable hair, and Mitt just has to remember that there is some precedent for serving as a governor and a federal judge before ultimately becoming President. (Of course, the same person who did all that also routinely got stuck in the White House bathtub due to fatness, so he's not the perfect role model.)
Picture: William Howard Taft, the fattest president, served as a federal judge on the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals and as Governor-General of the Phillipines before being elected Commander in Chief.
