Beacon Hill's Got a New Market

wholefoods.gifWhile this Bostonist has never lived in Beacon Hill, we have heard the woes from our friends and co-workers about the lack of a decent supermarket in the area. In such a pricy neighborhood, the shopping options are limited to pricy, smaller local markets like Savenor's and Deluca's. Well, the waiting for a supermarket is over; a brand new Whole Foods Market is opening today in the Charles River Plaza on Cambridge Street. (A Stop and Shop Supermarket was located in this same spot but was closed in 2003, which marked the end of having a major chain grocer in the area.) Bostonist has not always been a fan of Whole Foods, with it being considerably more expensive than some of the others, especially the fabulous Market Basket. Some residents are a bit apprehensive about the prices at Whole Foods and are crossing their fingers that a more affordable supermarket will be built in the Haymarket area once the Big Dig is completed. But once the Central Artery is completely taken down near the Haymarket, the Rose Kennedy Greenway construction will be underway. Somehow, Bostonist just can't picture a Shaw's in that area, unless of course the Haymarket gets pushed out for good.

Whole Foods is coming to London, UK too! Yay!

Whole Foods is funny when it comes to prices. Some things (like most of the produce and the meat), although a great quality, are really expensive but others end up being less than at my local "regular" grocery stores. In the end, I think it would all even out, except that when shopping at WF one tends to find a cartload of things one didn't know one needed until spotting them on the shelf.
