Bostonist has been having such a great time watching Romney with his eyes on the prize we almost forgot that that Bill Weld is going to run for Governor of New York. The New York Post, that always reputable daily publication in New York City, today brings us the kind of news that makes Bostonist want to rush right out and pick up a copy of the Herald. Robert Byrnes, a former Weld speechwriter, tells the Post today that Weld ran a "libertine" administration, which included, among other things, a late-night menage-a-trois in the statehouse with a staffer and two college students. (Weld declined to comment on the allegations.) When Weld resigned to pursue a spot as Ambassador to Mexico, Bostonist remembers Jesse Helms blocking the nomination because Bill was “soft on drugs,” but we certainly don’t remember hearing any of this:
Byrnes, who called Weld "a brilliant guy," recounts a tale of picking up two Weld-admiring Radcliffe sophomores at a Harvard Square bar, noting that after several hours of drinking they quickly transferred "their idolatry" toward Weld "onto me."Now, the next time Mitt sits down to a cabinet meeting, he might be wondering if the table is coated with Old English or Olde English.
"Rather than go back to my tiny apartment, we headed into the State House, drank Jack Daniel's, rolled naked about the oval 'Cabinet meeting' table," wrote Byrnes.
