Nomar Garciaparra, former sox shortstop and local sports icon, was reported to have saved two women from drowning after they fell into Boston Harbor late last week. Without bringing an entourage with him for the rescue (like some people we know) the story is only breaking now, thank you Inside Track ladies.
Nomar was back in the Hub visiting his uncle, Victor Garciaparra and on Friday when the two heard a scream, and then a splash. Nomar and his uncle immediately ran out the door and onto the pier to assist the woman in need. As the two men were rushing to assist, a second woman fell into the water and bumped her head on the pier. The Garciaparra duo were able to pull the women from the water to safety.
This was Nomar's best performance, in Boston (and Chicago for that matter) in years. Nomar potentially saved two Bostonians lives, but couldn't save the Red Sox' seasons in his time with the Olde Towne Team. It wasn't until Theo Epstein shipped number five out of town last year (for Orlando Cabrera and Dave Roberts, no less) did the Sox deliver on their promise to the Red Sox faithful, in winning the 2004 World Series. It’s probably a good thing that he had to run and swim, as opposed to having to throw anything. Knowing Nomar's arm if a life raft were needed it may have ended up somewhere in Quincy.
“Are you Nomah?”
