Surprise! Menino Wins

hennigan.jpgThere was no "The Giants win the pennant!" moment of stunned jubilation last night, as Tom "What Me Worry" Menino cruised to victory in the mayoral race, defeating Maura "For The Love of God, I Mortgaged My House" Hennigan by a 35-percentage-point margin. South Boston, as promised last winter by angry residents who had their illegal parking privileges revoked, did not support the mayor. Unfortunately for Hennigan, parking is not that big a deal in much of the city, so snow removal didn't carry the day. In other not-so-surprising political news, incumbent Michael Sullivan remained mayor of Lawrence, in keeping with the statewide trend of mayors named Michael Sullivan. Texas also approved a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, shocking no one.

Maura Hennigan was at my polling place on Tremont Street when I dragged myself out to vote at

noon (bird flu picked up last week in Shanghai can't keep me from Purelling my hands and exercising Democracy with a capital D) She was wearing a smart black pantsuit and the grim visage of a woman who had nigh on 100 more empty polling sites to get across her "Well SOMEONE has to run against him!" campaign. The interesting thing for me was that she was completely focused on the people working the polling station - the other woman who was there to vote and I were merely obstacles in her path to shake hands with all the people working the polling place. Next campaign she might want to focus on the voters. Just saying.
