Nomie Come Home!

images.jpgIt was heard 'round the 'net that old buddy Nomar Garciappara, former Red Sox shortstop and Boston icon, has cut ties with his latest employer, the Chicago Cubs. ESPN.com is reporting that the Cubs have asked Nomar's agent to "see if he can find a better fit" with another big league club.

Garciapparra, who spent parts of 9 seasons in Boston, was dealt to the Cubs in the infamous four-team deal orchestrated in part by Theo Epstein at the 2004 trade deadline, which brought Orlando Cabrera and Dave Roberts to the Sox team that went on to win the World Series.

The Red Sox last season agreed to a four-year-deal with (gulp) Edgar Renteria in the $30 million + range. Knowing what has gone on of late on Yawkey Way and the manner in which the current administration has dealt with recent mistakes, it's unlikely that the Sox management would be willing to throw in the towel on the Renteria investment. But there is one important thing that average baseball fans might not know about Nomar...

After returning from a wicked groin tear sustained early last season, Garciaparra's shortstop position was filled when he returned, and he moved over to play third base when Aramis Ramirez was sidelined. And guess who needs a thirdbaseman, especially if they don't manage to resign Bill Mueller? Bostonist must make this plea: Nomar, come home. Shortstop, third base, bench coach, Bostonist doesn't care. Bostonist misses you. You will be welcomed back with open arms.
