The biggest story to hit the print media and sensationalized world of television news in Boston was the Fort Point Channel meth lab and death of Kevin McCormick. Initial medical examination suggests that McCormick died of a heart attack following or during sexual activity. Friends contacted the police after finding him dead in his apartment. When they arrived they removed McCormick’s body and more drug manufacturing equipment than quite possibly concentrated in any one place in New England. Local blogs were buzzing with the news as it broke yesterday and today, community journalists at UniversalHub were tracking them all the while. From those close to Kevin to others who were purely startled by the discovery in their neighborhood. An MIT graduate with degrees in engineering and computer science McCormick had become nationally recognized as an innovative artist.
True to form, the Boston Herald reported off handedly about the plastic box removed from the Fort Point loft and featured the officer removing said box, reportedly containing several rodents. Allusions to the Richard Gere rumor circulating since the eighties made Bostonist cringe. There’s a far bigger problem that isn’t new. Crystal meth is bad news, especially the home cooked kind. Trying not to make a bad pun, home grown meth labs are potentially very explosive. Filled with volitale chemicals under the watch of generally untrained amateur chemists. The Herald reports “the discovery of the lab renewed fears that the crystal meth craze sweeping the West Coast and Midwest has reached the Hub.” Crystal meth has become a major problem in poor, rural towns in the Midwest, even parodied this weekend on SNL. It’s been a widely reported problem on the West Coast as well, and recently, as the Herald report does go on to say, some gay men have become occasional users. Highly addictive drugs are very dangerous for occasional users. Bostonist doesn’t let friends do meth, we suggest you adopt the practice.
