Eating Out: Kowloon

kowloon.jpgJust north on Route 1 in Saugus lays Kowloon Restaurant, a gaudy landmark entertaining people with Asian cuisine for years. Primarily filled with an Polynesian/Easter Island look, Kowloon is best described as eclectic. The front lobby is filled with pictures of past celebrities that have visited Kowloon over the years, most of who are no longer celebrities. Bostonist didn't really pay any mind to that though since we were craving some Chinese food.

Luckily Bostonist was seated by the least gaudy item in the place, the wishing fountain. Without hesitation, we ordered Kowloon's flagship Pu Pu Platter, which was pretty standard: egg rolls, crispy wontons, beef teriyaki, fried shrimp, spare ribs, chicken wings, chicken fingers. Besides the fact that it comes out with an open flame, much like their scorpion bowls, it’s enough food for two for an entire meal. Everything fried was heavenly; the teriyaki was also really well done, and the chicken was fantastic, but the Platter was a little too pork-heavy with a few mystery cold pork strips.

We also decided to order some of the pork fried rice, lo mein, and General Gau's Chicken. Everything was great in terms of Chinese food, and don’t worry if you are looking for other Asian cuisine since Kowloon has a bit of an identity crisis. They have Cantonese, Szechwan, Thai, and Japanese Sushi menus as well.

Bostonist warns you all to be prepared for the check since prices adds up quick, especially if you're throwing back those scorpion bowls. But on the flip side, you’ll have a doggie bag with days worth of leftovers. Not that you’ll necessarily need it. For the first time ever post-Chinese food, we weren’t even hungry an hour later.
