Brady Bunk, Pats Pitiful

Whoever said that you "can't win 'em all" might have had a brief audience with Bill Belichick before yesterday’s matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Patriots lackluster performance and effort yesterday was just enough to keep them from being run out of the building, and that is about it. The Patriots were basically playing what would be considered the second string, if this were earlier in the season, due to their rash of injuries this season and some interesting “inactive players” yesterday with a divisional matchup around the corner.

Not only was the defensive secondary banged up, but offensively, Tom Brady was without MANY of his weapons including the injured running backs Corey Dillon and Kevin Faulk, a patchwork offensive line, and no David Givens or Bethel Johnson at receiver. These problems, along with a lackluster running game performance by Patrick Pass (8 rushes for 26 yards) and Heath Evans (6 rushes, 11 yards) lead to double-teams all day long for Deion Branch and Troy Brown, which made moving the football difficult in the first half. Brady's inaccuracy didn't help either.

Tom was far from Terrific, throwing a career high four interceptions, while going 22 for 40 with 248 yards and a single Touchdown. Brady was intercepted by Chiefs free safety Greg Wesley 3 times, and then a fourth time by safety Sammy Knight in the fourth quarter which put any comeback hopes the Patriots had, to rest.

New England again had a tough time against a solid running attack, as Chiefs third year man Larry Johnson rushed 31 times for 119 yards and a touchdown while compiling 5 receptions for 53 yards. The Chiefs offense was complimented mightily in the passing game, with Trent Green doing literally whatever he wanted to do, completing 19 of 26 passes for 1 TD and 323 yards.

"Tough day,"stated Brady in a post-game press-conference. Brady was high all day with most of his passes, took numerous hits, and his accuracy was far from Super for the 2 time Super Bowl MVP, who tied his second-lowest single-game QB rating in history with a 42.5.

The three-time champions made no excuses in this game, which was played in the wake of the death of Bill Belichick's father, Steve Belichick, who passed away a week ago. "We had the game plan. We practiced well," he said. "They put us in a position to win and we didn't execute it," said linebacker Willie McGinest.

On the bright side, the Pats still have a firm grip on the AFC East, with a 2 game lead over Miami and Buffalo. Hopefully the Pats can lick their wounds and get back on track next week when the NY Jets come to town for an important divisional matchup. Bostonist will be watching.
