NKOTB's Knight performing at the Tree Lighting

As you all probably know, tonight is Boston's 64th Offical Holiday Tree Lighting beginning at 6:30 PM and ending at 8:00 PM. This is not what suprises Bostonist, the great debate is over our fine city's decision to have the likes of Jordan Knight as a performer. We get the connection, The New Kids are Boston boys and there is a lot of pride in something like that - but we are not sure what kind of crowd the City was expecting to pull with booking Knight.

Here at Bostonist headquarters we were scratching our heads trying to remember the last time that we had actually heard anything from Knight, and then we had our moment of clarity - the 1999 single "Give it to You". It was right around the same time that fellow New Kid on the Block (NKOTB) Joey McIntyre was making his big come back as well. If memory serves us correctly both were featured on MTV's "Cribs", usually meaning that at any given moment their careers could fall out the bottom again. A little research tells us that Knight is making another comeback with his new single "Where is your Heart Tonight" - well... good luck Jordan. Side Note: To see all your old favorite New Kids music videos check out this website, it made our heart skip a beat all over again.

Back to the event on hand, the evening promises to be jam packed according to About.com, "The lighting of Boston Common and The Public Garden will feature entertainers including Jordan Knight (see above rant), Jon Secada, The Holy Tabernacle Church Choir, The Magic of Lyn, ParkARTS talent search winner Casey Pollard, vocalist Merle Perkins, The Boston Children’s Choir, an appearance by Santa Claus, and additional surprise guests."

I attended the tree lighting last night.

Masquerade - Boston's song & dance troupe - appeared too many times. Their dancing was a v. mediocre, singing was ok.

Jordan Knight - seems like a nice guy, but lacks talent. Also referred to us in the crowd as Bostonites before remembering we are Bostonians.

Jon Secada - engaging performer, gave a strong vocal performance.

Mumbles & Santa - pretty much as you'd expect.

Carrie ... thanks for the run down. Knight referred to Bostonians and Bostonites? Wow, that is pretty impressive.

I was there last night as well. Masquerade was clearly filler material during the commercial breaks, and they definitely did appear too many times. At times they appeared a bit unrehearsed, but they did a decent job. It was rather amusing, though, each subsequent time they were announced for a singalong, the crowd let out a little bit louder moan. By the time they announced the last singalong when the Mayor and Santa were on stage, everyone in the audience was going "oh man, not another singalong!".

It's great that they telecast the show, but all the commerical breaks really kill the whole flow of it. At one point, Jordan Knight was awkwardly standing on the stage looking blankly into the audience waiting for his cue. It would be nice if they could just find a sponsor to make a nice donation so it could be commercial-free.

Hello,
After watching Jon Secada perform how likely would you purchase his latest CD "Same Dream" ?
