Well, it looks like the Sox aren’t the only Boston sports team looking to put themselves out on a limb to get some better talent. It seems that the dismal Boston Bruins have traded their sandy colored haired team captain, Joe Thornton, to the San Jose Sharks last night in a move that shocked many hockey fans. Bostonist will admit that we don’t spend enough quality time with the NHL, thus the lack of posts about the Bruins (and Celtics for that matter), but when we heard Bob Lobel announce the trade last night on the 11 o’clock newscast, we knew this was a major move. Thornton started his NHL career here in Boston in 1997, when he was drafted as the number one pick, but things with Thornton weren’t always golden and his performance was disappointing to some. General manager Mike O'Connell decided to change it up this season, with the team having lost nine of its last ten games. Thornton is heading west and we’ll be seeing ex-Sharks-new-Bruins left wing Marco Sturm, center Wayne Primeau, and defenseman Brad Stuart take the ice tonight when the Bruins play Ottawa at 7p.m.
Bostonist first brought up the whole saga about the World Series baseball being clung to by Ex-Sox first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz way back in January. Mientkiewicz, who at the time was still a Sox player, decided that the baseball was his to keep forever since he caught it that fateful night in St. Louis; the Sox decided it was theirs to treasure forever. We haven’t really heard much about it since; Mientkiewicz went to play for the New York Mets and that was that. But the Sox aren’t done fighting for it according to the AP this morning; they are upping the ante and are now getting the lawyers involved. Mientkiewicz, who is now a free agent without a team, could be facing the Massachusetts court system after the Sox organization went to Suffolk Superior Court looking to get permanent possession of the ball. Bostonist will keep you posted on this one as it unfolds, but we’re guessing Mientkiewicz might have to take the ball out of that safe deposit box and give it to Lucchino and the boys.

This trade is SO bad, SO horrible that I wish the Bruins were still on strike. I have never remember a worse move in my life. This is like trading Tom Brady for Arron Brooks just to "put a spark into the team". I can't say enough bad things about Hockey in this town.
agree Gump - here's to Joe T scoring a ton of goals and winning big in SJ - talk aboutbeing thrown under the bus by those old suits on Causeway St - sighhhhhhhh
Nyet! The Bruins beat the best team in hockey last night with the new guys. Joe T = over paid, over-rated, only plays when he feels like it. Clevo dined with him and said he's a herb.
