The Boston Globe reports today that "the city of Boston has approved a 50 cents per ride gasoline surcharge on cab fares, which are already among the highest in the nation." Breath a brief sigh of relief because this fare hike is only temporary. The goal of the 50 cent surcharge is to relieve the Boston taxi cab driver's wallet of the burden of increased gas prices faced in the post-Katrina context. Don't get too excited, there is no definite termination of the increase.
The article reported that we are already the FIFTH most expensive city to take a taxi in, trailing only places like Honolulu, Miami, and San Fran.
It would seem that with this fare increase, we will be even less likely than we already are to cough up the $20+ fare to get home from some of our favorite Boston establishments. Bostonist is becoming increasingly interested in alternative modes of transportation as the cost of transportation in our fine city increases. In addition, for some of us there is always the bus, and even their fares are increasing.

Sweet, I'm totally rolling up to my next drinking adventure with one of these.
Think I can register it with the Bay State and take it on the street? I'm not sure the sidewalks on Longfellow are wide enough in all spots to take me.
On a side note: Why couldn't they have approved a fidy cent hike on the Night Owl bus service? I'd sure like that back.
So...is it an OUI if you use one of these to get home after last call? Heh...drunk sidewalk driving = disaster.
