When Krispy Kreme doughnuts first came to the Commonwealth, lo those many years ago (OK, three years), Bostonist was excited. Sure, this is Dunkin' Donuts territory, but damn! Krispy Kreme's doughnuts tasted wicked good, like eating flavored fat with sugar on top (yum!). But now, it appears the frail craft that was our doughnut enthusiasm has been cruelly dashed against the rocky shoals of business futility: Krispy Kreme has now closed two of its Massachusetts locations. (The one in the Pru closed in August, and Meford and Saugus have now also gone the way of the dinosaur. According to the Krispy Kreme website, there's still a store in Dedham.) Apparently, facing declining sales (stupid low-carb diets!) and allegations of corporate fraud (stupid federal laws!), the Krispy Kreme company is undergoing some serious restructuring, and the good people of northern greater Boston must suffer as a result.
Now, Bostonist recognizes that Dunkin' Donuts loyalists will poo-poo our lamentations, but we should be clear: We like Dunkin' Donuts and frequent them nearly every workday. But whenever we found ourselves near Wellington Circle (as we often do, since it's on the way to the Babies R Us in Everett), those sweet, fluffy confections proved irresistible - more like dessert or special treat than a breakfast staple. (And for anyone who favors Dunkin' Donuts just because it's local, we think you're crazy. What's next? Fierce loyalty to Staples over Office Max? Friendly's over Denny's? Cossack Vodka (Somerville's own!) over Georgi?!) Our trips to Malden and Everett will never be the same. At least there's still a Krispy Kreme at Mohegan Sun, so we can take the edge off our losing ways with a hot, fresh-baked puff of glazed goodness. If only they served Cossack Vodka, too.
