It’s been an eventful week for the Sox at baseball’s winter meetings. Already, 2 deals have been made by the Sox as the 2006 squad starts to shape up.

Earlier in the week, the Sox sent backup catcher and fan favorite Doug "The Belly" Mirabelli to the San Diego Padres in exchange for second baseman and former All-Star Mark Loretta. Loretta is a career .301 hitter over 11 major league seasons and is expected to hit 2nd in the Sox lineup.

Earlier today, Bostonist has learned that the Sox traded shortstop Edgar Renteria to the Atlanta Braves for a top prospect by the name of Andy Marte. Marte is a third baseman and is regarded by baseball brass as the best prospect in the Atlanta Braves system.

It remains to be seen if the Sox are done dealing at the winter meetings. Currently, the Sox do not have a starting shortstop. Manny rumors still swirl, and David Wells still wants out. What will happen next?

See ya Kev..
Also, Nomar has interest in playing "utility for the Yanks"... great. We could use a SS over HERE!
Listen, this is the strangest winter meeting in a while. What were our problems 1) Bullpen Bullpen Bullpen. Then we needed more pitching. Somehow we get a second baseman, no shortstop, no prospect short stop, and 4 third baseman (Youk, Marte, Lowell, and Millar if he accepts arbitration). Its like we made MORE problems for ourselves. WHERE ARE YOU THEO!!!!
At least we have a GM now -- or rather, two of them. Rumor persists that Theo will come back too, though as a consultant/advisor type rather than the one in charge.
